Bankruptcy and Medical Bills

As we’ve written about in previous posts, medical bills can quickly throw people into personal bankruptcy – in fact, some studies cite medical bills as the #1 reason people file for bankruptcy.

The only option was to declare bankruptcy, Gibel said.

There are some 50 million Americans without health insurance. In the UK there is a social healthcare system, without this safety net I am sure the UK would be in much the same situation.

  4. Our healthcare system really is a mess. I don’t know if universal healthcare is the answer, but there is something inherently wrong when a doctor can only see a patient for 6 minutes as outlined by an HMO. When the insurance companies can call the shots, everybody loses. When an insurance company would rather have a patient die and then pay out a settlement to the family afterwards because it is cheaper, that is hideously immoral and unethical. When a government will let these companies make billions and then let the individuals hang out to dry so the only option they have is to file bankruptcy due to medical bills, well…you fill in the adjectives that describe this because I can’t find the words to adequately express the disguest and outrage that I feel.
