The number of personal bankruptcy filings rose by 8 percent in June, to 2,553 from 2,358 in May. This June’s personal bankruptcy filings were 56 percent higher than last year, when there were just 1,632.

From south Florida:
South Florida business bankruptcy filings tumbled 30 percent last month to 111 from a year ago. The number of South Florida consumers filing bankruptcy, however, increased 60 percent to 1,685.

There were 1,972 filings last month, compared with 1,758 in September, and up 61 percent from 1,228 in October 2007, according to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida.
