US Credit Card Debt Vs. World GDP:

This is a follow up to my post here about credit card debt:

http://www.bankruptcyaccess.com/?p=4

Let’s take a look at these debt numbers in another way.

(I assume they are talking US only here & I assume Wikipedia’s numbers are at least close to correct.)

A)Credit card debt is at an all-time high of “$947.4 billion.”

and

B)The GDP of countries #81-210 on this list (I used the far right List by the CIA World Factbook) is approximately $938Billion.

That means that current US credit card debt alone is greater than the COMBINED GDPs of

Lithuania, Latvia, Turkmenistan, Sri Lanka, Syria, Lebanon, Costa Rica, Yemen, Estonia Uruguay, Cameroon, El Salvador, Uzbekistan, Côte d’Ivoire, Iceland, Panama, Cyprus, Ethiopia, Bahrain, Zimbabwe, Jordan, Ghana, Macau, China, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Trinidad and Tobago, Tanzania, Burma, Bolivia, Brunei Darussalam, Botswana, Albania, Uganda, Senegal, Zambia, Gabon, Honduras, Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nepal, Georgia, Equatorial Guinea, Paraguay, Armenia, Jamaica, Cambodia, Mozambique, Chad, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mali, Burkina Faso, Republic of Macedonia, Republic of the Congo, Namibia, The Bahamas, Malta, Papua New Guinea, Nicaragua, Benin, West Bank and Gaza, Haiti, Jersey, Fiji, Guinea, Niger, Moldova, Laos, Mongolia, French Polynesia, Barbados, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Malawi, New Caledonia, Kosovo, Rwanda, Guam, Mauritania, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Swaziland, Somalia, Togo, Montenegro, Aruba, Suriname, North Korea, Greenland, The Faroe Islands, Central African Republic, Lesotho, Sierra Leone, Eritrea, Cape Verde, Belize, Bhutan, Antigua and Barbuda, Gibraltar, San Marino, Maldives, Burundi, Guyana, Saint Lucia, British Virgin Islands, Djibouti, Seychelles, Liberia, Northern Mariana Islands, Grenada, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Timor-Leste, Comoros, Vanuatu, Samoa, The Gambia, Solomon Islands, Guinea-Bissau, American Samoa, Dominica, Micronesia, Tonga, Cook Islands, Palau, Marshall Islands, São Tomé and Príncipe, Anguilla, Kiribati, Tuvalu, & Niue.

Remember, this is JUST credit card debt being compared to entire nations’ GDPs.

This map might make it a little clearer. Combine the red nations’ GDPs & they still don’t add up to Americans’ current credit card debt. Granted, a lot of us use credit cards to pay for everything. But, a good proportion of us carry balances too :

US credit card debt exceeds the combined GDP of these nations.

Something to think about.

It is really scary when you consider how in debt the US. Considering I am in one of the countries that you mention, which still has a growing economy it hits home just how dire things are back home in the US.
